Issues That Shape Athens

In their previous ‘Slackpole’ issue of Flagpole, guest author Judy Long wrote a neat piece profiling the Athens City Council of 100 years ago. It’s interesting how so many things really do stay the same in many ways. So I’m starting a category that looks at issues that shape Athens. Issues that won’t go away – or are built into the structure of Athens politics themselves.

These issues include Town vs. Gown; Students vs. Quality of Life; Local business vs. Big Business; Poverty; Historic Preservation; Property Taxes; Planning; Gentrification. Any others?
